Search uses the independent GeoNames city index. A dragged pin keeps its precise coordinates; its nearby city label is only a reference. The colored surface uses IPv4 ICMP round-trip measurements between RIPE Atlas anchors. Dragging the origin blends nearby measured origins; the map interpolates between measured destinations. Pins between anchors are estimates, not tests of a specific home or server.
The dotted connection is a visual link between your two pins, not a measured network path. The range widens as either pin moves away from measured anchors. Connection allowances are rough scenarios added at the origin. Congestion, routing, Wi-Fi, VPNs and destination networks can produce different results.
Measurements cover a 30-minute window. The timestamp on the map shows when the current snapshot was collected; a cached fallback is labeled when the live feed is unavailable.

Results describe the path to our servers. Browser scheduling, server load, and network conditions can affect them; this is not an ISP line test.
